On Thursday Surrey Scorchers make the long journey north to take on last season's BBL Trophy winners, Caledonia Gladiators, in a pivotal Group A fixture.
Despite a solid BBL Championship campaign, the Gladiators have made heavy weather of the Trophy this season and face their second consecutive elimination game after making an 0-2 start. Surrey, by contrast, come to East Kilbride with a 2-0 record and they know that one more win, either here or on Saturday against the Phoenix, will book their place in the final four.
Recent form
Caledonia started their Trophy campaign with a narrow three-point loss at home against the Cheshire Phoenix. Three days later, their title defence fell into real jeapordy when they were beaten on the road by the Plymouth City Patriots.
Facing elimination they travelled to Sheffield and took care of business, an 80-72 victory keeping their hopes of a final four appearance alive. Their destiny is out of their hands, but a win on Thursday will put real pressure on Surrey going into their final group match on Saturday.
Key strengths
Scoring in the paint. Over their past three matches the Gladiators have averaged 39.33 points per game in the paint, with their two centres Fahro Alihodzic and Clifton Moore Jr causing havoc.
Both have the ability to post up, using their elite footwork to get to where they want to go. Both are steady free throw shooters too, so will not be scared of contact when going to the rim.
One key thing for Surrey to watch out for will be the two-man game between Alihodzic and their GB international guard, Patrick Whelan. They appear to have excellent chemistry on the court and both have the vision to pick the perfect pass.

If Surrey are able to contain the Gladiators inside, then they'll have their work cut out stopping the sharp shooting Czech Lukas Palyza from the perimeter. In 24 games this season he is averaging 42.67% from beyond the arc, comfortable shooting it from either side of the court.

One to watch
This is a talented team who can hurt you in many ways, but Patrick Whelan is the man who makes them tick. The 27 year old former Leicester man has been in fine form this season, averaging a team high 15 points per game, as well as 4 assists in 32 minutes of play.
He boasts superb court vision, he can create for himself and for his team mates. His assist to turnover ratio is an impressive 2.09, a career high. He's also a threat from the perimiter, shooting the three-ball at a 42.40% success rate.
Previous meetings
This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season. Caledonia came out on top in the previous two match ups, winning 86-79 back in October. Trent Buttrick lead the way with a 15 point, 10 rebound double-double that night.
The Gladiators followed up that success with an 8 point victory at Surrey Sports Park in December. On that occasion Patrick Whelan's 17 points did most of the damage.
Tip off at PlaySport Arena is at 7:45pm and you'll be able to follow the action live on the BBL's YouTube channel.
