A three-point avelanche in the third quarter propelled the Surrey Scorchers to an impressive 94-81 victory over the Bristol Flyers on Sunday, as Surrey made it three wins from their last four games.
Padiet Wang lead the scoring for the visitors, finishing the game with 25 points and 8 assists. Quin Cooper also added 20 off the bench in a game where the Scorchers shot 17/33 from three-point range, completing a perfect weekend.
It was a disjointed start from both teams as the effects of playing two days in a row clearly showed. It was the home team who found their shooting rhythm first, with Tejon Lucas leading the way as the Flyers opened up a nine-point lead in the early stages.
Following the media time out the Scorchers finally got going. Josh Steel hit Surrey's first three-pointer of the game, at the fifth attempt. Moments later Quin Cooper nailed another from the corner to tie the game. Momentum seemed to shift entirely as the Flyers struggled on offence.
Wang scored five straight points as Surrey took the lead, but Bristol battled back in the closing stages of the quarter. Levi Bradley scored four points and Raphell Thomas-Edwards beat the buzzer to give the hosts a one-point lead heading into the second.
It was back-and-forth between the two teams as they traded hoops. Cooper continued his hot shooting from the bench, nailing two three-pointers. Steel added one of his own from behind the arc to give Scorchers a four-point lead.
In the blink of an eye the hosts battled back. Tevin Olison connected with a three and then Thomas-Edwards hit another from distance to put Bristl back in front. Scorchers finished the period with just one made field goal in the final three minutes of play and trailed the Flyers 43-41 at half time.
Surrey came out firing after the break. Steel set the tone with a three-pointer, this was quickly followed by Justin Robinson who put the visitors back in front. Kedrian Johnson pulled the Flyers back within one, before Robinson and Steel responded with another three-pointer each to give the Scorchers a seven-point lead.
As the quarter went on, the hot shooting continued. Padiet Wang put down a dunk before sinking two long range efforts of his own. Surrey started the period on a 20-6 run and held a 12-point lead going into the commercial time out.
Olison hit back with a three of his own after the time out, but the Scorchers continued to shoot at an extraordinary rate. They would finish the quarter with nine made three-pointers and held a nine-point lead heading into the fourth.
Bristol started the brighter of the two teams and continued to chip away at Surrey's lead, however Surrey soon found their stroke again and by the commercial time-out the lead had stretched to 15.
From there it was over as a contest and Surrey got up as many as 19-points. Bristol, also playing the second game in a back-to-back, were unable to find the required resistance and the Scorchers completed an impressive road victory.
