Surrey Scorchers ended their three-game losing streak with a well deserved 90-77 win over the Newcastle Eagles at Surrey Sports Park on Saturday evening. It's a result that keeps their faint hopes of catching Bristol in 7th alive and also gives them a measure of revenge after suffering a heavy loss in the north-east four weeks ago.
Cam Gooden lead the scoring for the home side, ending the night with 18 points on 11 shots. Saiquan Jamison posted his customary double-doube, grabbing 10 rebounds to go with 11 points as the Scorchers won the rebounding battle.
Surrey's bench was also a key factor in the game, as they contributed 37 points to the winning effort. This was in evidence at the end of the opening quarter, as a four point game was quickly blown open by Quin Cooper nailing back-to-back three pointers to give his team a commanding lead.
In the second Surrey built their biggest lead of the night when they went up by 16 points, however the Eagles fought back and ended the half on an 11-1 run as they looked to stage a comeback.
A bucket from Gooden to start the second half put Surrey back in control and they went into the fourth holding a seven point advantage.
Newcastle refused to go away and staged another fightback, pulling themselves within three points of the hosts as the fourth quarter got underway. Surrey responded well to the challenge and hit back with a 10-2 run to re-establish control.
It was a position that the Scorchers never surrendered and they secured a feel-good win as they head towards the end of the regular season.
Surrey remain in 8th place in the BBL standings and their chances of catching Bristol Flyers in 7th are remote to say the least. The Flyers have won four of their last five games and wrap up their season against the Caledonia Gladiators on Friday.
Meanwhile Surrey will travel to London to face the champions on Thursday, before playing their final game against Leicester Riders in Guildford on Sunday afternoon.
